Founded Women in Technology in Queensland in 1997 and has spent nearly three decades building the pipeline behind it.
WiT started as ten women meeting to work out how to support each other in an industry that had very few of them. It is now one of the larger professional communities for women in STEM in Australia. Bernhardt was its founder and inaugural president, and went on to co-found AWISE, the Australian Women in IT, Science and Engineering network, in 2005.
She founded the software firm ThoughtWare Australia in 1999 and remains its chief executive. Her honours include an OAM for services to the information technology industry.
